Story
For those of you who know me, you may know I work within our healthcare system. I see first hand the struggles individuals have coping mentally. Life gets hard, unfair and overwhelming for people and it is not easy for all of us to make a human connection even in our 'connected' modern society sadly. That, or people are a bit too British about it, and afraid to talk about these things. I see (and get) how things can fall apart even when they appear fine on the surface.
However, I never thought I would personally be looking in the face of mental health issues myself. I am one of the lucky ones. Something clicked. I started to get help, realised the love around me, and am on a route to a better place.
Others are not so fortunate, struggle to open up and find support. Crushingly, every 2 hours someone in England and Wales take their own life. Every 2 hours. Suicide is the biggest killer of men under 45 in the UK alone. This is not right.
Doing this event is about proving recovery. It is about using my physical abilities for more than personal competitive gain for a change. It is about transferring my ability into something that can help someone else somehow, and maybe even save someone. It is about helping people find that someone to talk to.
