We make lifesaving connections to help more patients survive and thrive

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Below are some details about the Anthony Nolan Trust, our team's nominated charity. Please take time to read about what they do and how your donation can help.

Please also read our team page which gives details of how we came to support this particular charity.

The Anthony Nolan Trust currently runs the UK’s largest and most successful stem cell register. They use it to save lives by matching donors to people who desperately need, a lifesaving stem cell transplant. Often, a transplant is the last hope for a person suffering from blood cancer.

When a person has blood cancer, doctors use chemotherapy and radiotherapy to destroy the disease. It’s effective but leaves their immune system very weak and fragile. By giving them a stem cell transplant, we can boost the number of healthy cells to kick start their immune system. But timing is critical: the donor’s stem cells must be available as soon as the treatment has finished.

The hospital starts by testing the person’s family as there’s a 30% chance of finding a sibling match. If they don’t find a match, they contact the Anthony Nolan Trust and they start searching their donor register. They have over 400,000 people on their register but because they match people by tissue type rather than blood groups, they don’t always find a match.

As opposed to a few different blood types, there are millions of different types of cell tissue. The success of a patient’s transplant depends on finding a match, otherwise their body will reject it. So it’s simple. The more people they have on the register, the more matches they can find and the more lives they can save.

For every one pound they spend:

- 82p goes to help save lives. This 82p includes finding overseas donors, recruiting new donors and providing donors.

- 9p goes to research. This includes cord blood research, and finding ways to make stem cell transplantation more successful.

- 8p goes to raising more money. This includes fundraising activities.

- 1p goes to administration. This includes the day-to-day running of the charity.
