Story

Gary's latest crazy challenge!

Anyone that knows Gary will know that he's not one for shying away from a challenge, the crazier the better as far as he's concerned.
With quite a few marathons under his belt, triathlons, an ironman, an Arch to Arc relay world record and the biggest yet his solo English Channel Swim you'd think he'd already had his fair share of gruelling events but oh no not Gary he's somehow managed to dream up something crazier!

On the 3rd January 2017 he decided to start a challenge of running 10k everyday for 365 days, bonkers you say (or at least that's what I said) quite the challenge eh but not content with doing just that he decided to throw in just a little bit more.
Incorporated into that he decided to run 13 miles a day in 13 days, with this now smashed he still wasn't content and he's now decided to go to the extreme......but all for a good cause!
On Friday 29th September Gary will begin his next challenge!!! He will attempt to run a marathon a day for 31 days, yes a MARATHON.......that's 26.2 miles every single morning for a whole 31 days. He'll be getting up in what to you and I is the middle of the night at 3.30am and running all the way from home to work during the week and running more local on a weekend. WHY I hear you ask, (because he's slightly bonkers, yes)
but he's doing this because he wants to! He's doing it because he's got more self motivation than anyone I have EVER met in my whole life and he's doing it because he wants to help raise vital funds to help beat cancer 👊🏻

If you saw my recent Facebook post about my mum you'll know that the last 4 years have been tough. My mum got diagnosed with Melanoma that sadly had been misdiagnosed for 18 months. Due to this misdiagnosis by the time we made people do something about it, it had already spread. The cancer had gone into Mum's lymph nodes. My mum had to go through operation after operation having tumours cut out that kept popping up over the months and months, we'd get rid of one and start thinking positive then another would appear. It's by far the toughest thing to watch someone you love, go through something like this and not be able to do anything about it. Just a few months ago mum got what we though was tonsillitis, it wasn't and we got the worst news and found out the cancer had spread to her throat, her liver and her lung, we were beyond devastated and instantly thought the worst.

Mum has been treated at Whiston and St Helens hospitals for her operations and follow up appointments but more recently has had to travel to the amazing place that is Clatterbridge Hospital. After being told her cancer had spread her amazing consultant offered her a lifeline and told her about Immunotherapy.
Mum had to make the hour and a half trip to have 4 rounds of therapy over a course of 12 weeks. With side effects making her feel poorly and cause her arthritis to hugely flare up to the point she could barely walk it was a tough few weeks for her but her sheer determination and with the support from her family and close friends she did it and was amazing the entire time. Yes she had dark days, we all did, we all had days when we cried and found it tough to be positive but as a family we got each other through it and by some miracle from above we're now at a point we never dared dream we'd be at. Just a couple of weeks ago my mum got told that her cancer had shrunk to virtually nothing and the treatment had worked, we were and if I'm honest we still are completely dumbstruck, we never dared think about getting to this point but by the sheer incredible talent of doctors and with the research into treatments for this devil of a disease we're somehow here.
Mum has to undergo treatment now every 2 weeks to keep her immune system high and fighting and she'll probably have to have this for the next 2 years but this is a minuscule price to pay. She's been given a new lease of life, she's smiling again and we get to keep her but if it wasn't for the funding and the money that people like Gary raise to go into cancer research, immunotherapy wouldn't exist and it wouldn't be able to work its magic on patients like my mum.
Gary is one of the amazing human beings that's prepared to push himself to the limits and go that extra mile (literally!) and help make a difference and hopefully with your help we can raise as much money and awareness of this as we possibly can.
We need your help. Your family needs your help. Your friends need your help because the sad fact is most families will at some point be effected by cancer and without the funds going into cancer research the cures just won't be there and that's something none of us wants.
Let's help beat this together, let's raise as much money as we can to help smash this disease and help our loved ones and ourselves get the best treatments possible.
Early diagnosis is key into treating most cancers and as well as raising funds we want to help raise awareness for cancer. Check yourselves regularly. If you notice any changes on your body go to a doctor. Nobody knows your body like you do. My mum started with a spot on the back of her shoulder, not a mole it looked like a little blood blister that over a period of time grew and ended up the size of a large pea. Only for mum almost begging for this to be removed it wouldn't have been. You need to request things, it's your body, your health and I'm a firm believer that if it wasn't there before get rid of it, look after yourself.

Your donation however big or small will help with the following:-

Clatterbridge is currently in the process of raising funds to build a new Cancer Care Centre. From 10 operating sites across Merseyside and Cheshire they make almost 221,000 patient contacts to around 30,000 individual patients every year and offer pioneering chemotherapy, radiotherapy and proton therapy treatments. They're embarking on a journey to change cancer care for the better and are expanding their services into the heart of the population they serve and progress even further with the ground-breaking research into therapies.

This £157m investment which is supported by a £51m charity appeal is huge news for cancer care in our area and will mean:
- A new 11 floor specialist cancer hospital in the heart of Liverpool.
- Uniting care for blood cancer and solid tumour patients for the first time in the city.
- 110 single en-suite rooms for inpatients.
- A dedicated 8 bedded teenage and young adult unit.
- Significant investment in the hospital on the Wirral.
- Better, safer care for the most seriously unwell cancer patients.
- A huge leap forward for cancer research and clinical trials in our region.

Cancer is now the leading cause of death in the UK, with the current stats showing that almost half of us will develop this disease over our lifetime which is a very scary thought. The number of deaths is significantly higher in the north west, that means people in our region have a very personal stake in the future of cancer care, it's something that really does matter.
Clatterbridge know that there is an urgent need for better tests, earlier diagnosis and more effective treatments for their patients and The New Cancer Hospital Appeal will help them to face the challenge and hopefully transform cancer care in our region.
With your support this new hospital alongside their extensive network of 10 operating sites could mean that Merseyside and Cheshire will become the leading centre of excellence in cancer with patients benefitting from the most advanced treatments, facilities and expertise along with groundbreaking research in 'first in human' clinical trials as close to their home as possible.
They know that this is a once in a generation chance to make huge progress in the fight against cancer. They want to do the best they can now for patients in the future so that in years to come our children and their children will have access to the world leading cancer treatments.

You can be a part of this. LET'S TRANSFORM CANCER CARE TOGETHER.

If there's anyone willing to offer their time and maybe run some miles with Gary as support for him we'd be greatly appreciative. This is going to be gruelling for him and beyond worrying for me, he's already had friends offer to run some of the miles with him and also cycle alongside him which is amazing and we're extremely greatful but if there's anything you can offer please get in touch. I'm also looking for someone to offer a couple of sports massages for him along the way as this is going to be tough on his body and he'll be in need of a little TLC along the way, can you help?

I'll be posting various things along the way and we'll both be updating you on how he's getting on with daily videos etc so you can keep in touch with where he's up to and if you've got any messages of support for him please add them once he's started the challenge. Gary's 31st day, Sunday 29th October will consist of him running from my Mums front door to the Clatterbridge Hospital which ironically is 26 miles, almost like it's meant be ☺️.
If you can be there to cheer him on either along the way (route will be posted) or at the finish line then you'd be more than welcome.
This will be his last marathon but he will then still carry on, god willing, doing his 10k everyday to complete his original challenge of 365 days, this will finish on the 3rd January 2018.

He's amazing even putting himself forward for this, but it takes a crazy willing sole with a big crazy heart to help causes like this and with it sitting so close to our hearts it's one he wasn't willing to let pass!

Come on Gary we're all with every step of the way 🏃🏻#garysmonthofmarathons
