WHY THIS EVENT AND THIS CHARITY?
Sadly in December 2019 our mother, Amanda Cardwell, was diagnosed with Lung Cancer that had metastasise to Lymphoma. Answers to questions were not available, so we planned to make as many memories with her until we knew more.
However, Wed 08 Jan 20 at 1021hrs I recieved a phone call from my sister whilst i was at work. Which never happens. However, 2 sentences fell from her voice that no child wants to hear.
"Gary, can you get back. Mum has only 2-3 days left."
To say I was heart broken, is an understatement. However, hearing my sister cry the way she did, broke me even more. She informed me that she was on the end of life ward, so i proceeded to inform my superiors that I had to leave work and return home.
For the 3 days, and 2 nights that she was in Kings Mill Hospital, End of Life ward, she was surrounded by all those who loved her. There was never a dull moment, nor did Amanda spend a moment alone. Myself, my sister and brother, and an assortment of family and friend stood by her throughtout the day and I stayed over, with little to no sleep, with our Aunty Dawn (The first night) and Thad (The second night) to ensure that she was never alone.
However, on Fri 10 Jan 20 at 1803hrs some of us were leaving the hospital to get some fresh air. Just as we left the elevator i recieved a phone call from my sister telling me that she had past.
The nurses and doctors on the End of Life Ward we outstanding. Personable, respectful and empathetic. There was never a time that they wasn't there when you needed it. Never a moment that their personal passion for their career wavered. A perfect example of how selfless they all truly are.
At the times that we were helpless with our mothers pain, they were there to help make her life as painless as possible.
I honestly can NOT thank all the nurses and doctors who were there for her, and us, throughout this very sorrowful period in our lives.
Honestly....words will never truly express the gratitude we have for all those who work on this ward.
This is merely me trying to repay back the ward who devoted such professionalism to a family in need.
