Story
Some of you may have seen my recent Instagram posts and wondered why I've been training in the mountains...
I just turned 42, and I've completed my fair share of endurance events, including numerous half-marathons and triathlons, so I wanted to ensure this next challenge was a real step-up in intensity.
The SAS Fan Dance is based on a 24km march carrying full kit that forms part of the British Special Forces selection course. It involves two lung-busting ascents and descents of Pen-Y-Fan, the highest peak in South Wales. Read more here: https://thefandancerace.com/
I'll be competing in the Clean Fatigue trail running category, carrying a backpack of essential kit, food and water. I'll be targeting a time of under three hours.
Growing up in a military family on numerous army bases, this is something of a personal challenge, but Coronation Street also has an older demographic at the very heart of its audience, so I am raising money for Age UK.
I’m interested in Age UK’s important work because, although medical advancements mean people are broadly living longer, the health, social and economic challenges facing the older generation are evolving.
Dementia and Alzheimer’s are growing concerns, and political polarisation, families living further apart, pension and social care shortfalls, alongside pressure to keep up with the digitalisation of modern living are all adding to feelings of isolation for those living into the years we all hope to one day see.
Please give what you can, and I'll keep pounding the Bannau Brycheiniog in pursuit of the iron legs required to get through it!
Much love, Gar. x
Most people will feel lonely at some point in their lives. Sadly, 2.65m older people feel they have no one to turn to for help and around 3.9m older people consider TV to be their main form of company. Donating to this page will help Age UK to continue providing vital services that offer companionship, advice and support for older people facing later life alone.
