RAISING MONEY FOR CLEANER UK SEAS AND RIVERS
I am swimming 3.4 miles (5.5km) for the Thames Half Marathon on the 15th August 2021. I am doing this to raise money for Surfers Against Sewage, because as an almost daily, year round swimmer in the Thames, I see (and smell) the scale of the problem with raw sewage being dumped where people swim, kayak, paddle board, row, sail, dive and fish.
The recent £90 million fine for Southern Water for spilling over 20 BILLION litres of sewage into the sea around where I grew up in Sandwich Kent and where my godson swims at Herne Bay made me turn this personal challenge swim into an opportunity to raise money for a charity that is at the forefront of campaigning and lobbying on this issue.
Our company, Non Plastic Beach is already a corporate donor to SAS, but I wanted to do more so that everyone can have the chance to swim in sewage free water, something that should be possible in a developed nation.
I have been training most days and in all weathers from +33 degrees air temperature to -4 air temperature and 22 degrees water to 1.9 degree water, year round and without a wetsuit.
