Looking Good In Green!
As Stewkley village Scout Leader and Nurse Practitioner, I have set sights on fulfilling my life-long dream of climbing Kilimanjaro,
Africa’s tallest mountain, in aid of improved care for cancer patients.
Standing at 5,895 metres Kilimanjaro is the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, lying approximately 205 miles from the Equator in Tanzania. Despite the heat of the African summers there are glaciers on its
peak all year round. Climbing Kilimanjaro is a popular challenge as it is the highest mountain that can be climbed without technical equipment.
My love of the outdoors has taken me to various places both in the UK and abroad, including walking the mountains of North Wales and
the Lake District, The Munros of the Scottish Highlands; as well as trekking the rainforest in Australia and the volcanoes of Iceland.
I am now combining my passion for hillwalking with that of my work with Palliative Care patients at Milton Keynes University Hospital to support the construction of the new Cancer Care Centre.
Currently, cancer services at the hospital are stretched with cramped waiting rooms and waiting times that can often be just too long. Despite the tireless work of the staff and management to improve services, patients still have to travel as far as Oxford, Northampton and Bedford for treatment at various sites. The current set up creates an environment that causes extra undue pressure on patients and
their families, at a time when they are already anxious and fearful.
A new cancer centre will mean:
- Patients will be able access treatment in one central location, avoiding the need to travel.
- Better support for each and every cancer patient, providing quality holistic services in an excellent environment.
- Provision of a new dedicated Haematology and Oncology ward where effective specialist care can be provided.
- An increase in capacity and staff, reducing waiting times and improving the patients’ overall experience.
Many of us, or our families are or have been touched by the scourge of cancer the new cancer care centre will provide a place where patients and families can feel supported and well cared for at a crucial time
in their lives.
