This is a real challenge for me. Not just to complete in strenuous activity which is enough of a challege for me...but to let other people know about my condition.
Last year, January 2013, my life was knocked by a diagnosis of Ulcerative Colitis. I was extremely poorly and was in and out of hospital for several weeks. During that time I lost an extreme amount of weight and was butchered by the amount of blood test and invasive procedures that I had to undergo to determine the location of my diagnosis. Throughout the year, I was having to frequently change my medication with different names and doses to remember. Whilst going through all of this, I was trying desperately to lead a normal life, studying for my Paediatric Nursing Degree and having a good university social life where people DIDNT know about my condition.
Just as I thought things were on the up, I became ill again August 2013 as the medication they had put me on had stopped working. Hopitalised again for another week, my consultant started talking me through my future with this condition. Potential surgery, future life long medications, leading a normal work life, starting a family...the list was endless. Things which I hadnt even thought about myself....! I knew at that moment that I had to grow up.
Since the new medication, I have been extremely lucky to know that my current medications are doing the trick and surgery may never need to happen. But it is something that enters my mind every time I see someone poorly (which in my profession, is every bloody day!). It is also something that could change tomorrow.
All that aside, I wouldnt be where I am without the MOST INCREDIBLE support from my family and friends. (I know it is a cliche but my goodness when you have such a personal condition like this, the last thing you want is people being prudish!)
This page is something that I hope to continue adding to for years to come. I want to raise awareness and raise money for Crohns and Colitis UK.
People need to know that it can happen to anyone and any time, with no explaination or reason.
Lets raise awareness today and continue the great support that C and C do on a regular basis.
I may be a lucky one right now, but someone else isnt...
THANK YOU!
