Story

As many will know, I embarked on my marathon journey back in 2020 to raise money and awareness for Age UK’s work for dementia and Alzheimer’s sufferers in the UK. A cause close to my heart after my Nan, Betty Corlett, was placed into a nursing home suffering with Alzheimer's, receiving around the clock care.

It was really hard for our family to see her mental condition deteriorate as she was always such an independent and outgoing person, who used to look after me and my sister when we were children.

Sadly, due to the pandemic, I didn’t get to complete the London Marathon before she died in June 2020. In her memory, I ran my first marathon in October 2020, running on my own from Lymm to Liverpool. Since then, Age UK have kindly held my charity place open to complete the London Marathon but between the pandemic and then with being pregnant with my son Jacob, it hasn’t happened…until now!

Unexpectedly, my Grandma, Marie Armstrong sadly passed away in January this year. A complete shock to us all, as Marie was as independent and sharp as they come! It makes me sad thinking of her passing alone in the house she had lived in for almost 60 years. This enduring thought has made me determined to (finally!) run the London Marathon, in her memory and for Age UK. Age UK really do such amazing work to help support our elders and to combat loneliness but they need your help for vital funds to continue this amazing work.

I am 9 months postpartum and until recently hadn’t been running at all for almost a year. I have had to start completely from scratch. At first I physically struggled to complete Couch 2 5K, let alone find the time to fit training in. To even get to the start line has been a miracle. My 16 week training plan has been patchy, incomplete and less than ideal with illness, injuries and plenty of tears, thinking I wasn’t going to be able to do it!  But I’ve struggled on, tried to fit in what I can and decided to push on. Foolish, mad or both,  I’m determined as ever but what  I really need now is your support…

Although I reached my fundraising target in 2020, your donations would really mean the world and help me cross that finish line. I know times are tough, but even just a couple of pounds could make a real difference to thousands of lives supported by Age UK. They could be your relatives, friends or next door neighbours, who need the support that Age UK provide. Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for your support.
