Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
On 16th April 2019 at 10 weeks and 4 days pregnant we heard the words that no expectant parents should hear, that our already much loved baby no longer had a heartbeat. To make it all the more difficult to accept, it had been a long 2.5 year journey to conceive, ultimately with the help of IVF treatment.
Our choice to share our story is not to gain sympathy or pity. We made this decision to help prove that miscarriage is not something to be ashamed of, we found the more people we told the less alone we felt. Our friends and family have been the unsung hero’s and we couldn’t have got through the last few weeks without them.
If your unable to sponsor us, please share our page. If nothing else we hope it helps anyone going through this to feel like they are not alone, that someone else understands the grief and pain caused by miscarriage, and the emotional and physical strain brought on by IVF.
To anyone currently struggling, my door is always open.
So why Tommy’s?
1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage. 1 in 100 women have 3 or more miscarriages in a row. Research into this area of pregnancy loss has been underfunded for years.
And yet it remains a shocking reality that under the NHS women will only be tested to find out why they have had a miscarriage after they have suffered through this three times in a row.
Miscarriage has long suffered from an attitude amongst the medical profession that some pregnancies are 'not meant to be' and therefore not worth spending time on. We refuse to accept this. It's not good enough. We know that half of all early miscarriages, for example, are not due to chromosomal abnormalities, but have underlying causes that we can cure.
That's why, in 2016, Tommy’s opened the UK’s first national centre dedicated to miscarriage research. By finding the root causes of miscarriage, we can take steps to stop it from happening. We can also give parents-to-be the answers they need, so they are not left without reasons for their loss.
