Let's face it, it is the laziest way to fundraise and I am about the laziest fundraiser on earth. Which makes it all the more amazing that I am hauling myself off the sofa at all, never mind to compete in not one Great Run, but two!

Either The Great North (the greatest half marathon in the world) or The Great South (the premier 10-miler) would be challenging enough, but (stupidly) I intend to run both to show my appreciation to Coeliac UK.

They are doing sterling work to make the world aware that Coeliacs, such as me, are not just fussy eaters. The condition can be debilitating, and dietary management is an essential part of leading a normal life - not that there's anything normal about a grey-haired fat bloke running twenty-odd miles instead of lounging in a pub.

Please support me in my one moment of public-spiritedness. I've never asked for sponsorship before, and I will never ask again. I know all sorts of enthusiastic people are undertaking all kinds of increasingly elaborate charitable challenges and your in-boxes are crammed to the hilt with begging letters. But consider this:

I suspect most of those people will have a great time moonwalking up Mount Etna or windsurfing the Sea of Tranquillity. I can guarantee I won't enjoy this one bit.
