Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge 2022, 12 December 2022
Children affected by the Ukraine crisis urgently need help. Their lives are being turned upside down by the escalating crisis and unfolding devastation. As bombs continue to fall, nowhere is safe. Children are at risk.

Story

 Challenge:

The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is known as the World’s Toughest Row. A challenge that will take us 3,000 miles across the Atlantic from San Sebastian in La Gomera, to the English Harbour in Antigua. The race begins on the 12th of December 2022 with 42 other teams from around the world racing to the finish line.

Call us crazy but…. We are attempting to be the first carbon neutral campaign,  cycling to the start line in La Gomera and sailing home from the finish in Antigua.

We will be covering over 7,500 miles over a period of 3-4 months!

The Goal:

Our goal is to raise £40,000 for our chosen charities:

1. Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM)

2. Maggie's - Home of Cancer Care

3. Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity (GOSH)

4. World Vision - Ukraine

We also hope to raise awareness and educate along our way about how to live more sustainable lifestyles. To do this we are working with brands that hold the same core values as us and are doing their bit to consider their ESG goals.

Team Full Throttle:

From four very different waves of life, we all came together thanks to team member Corrine Amos. We haven’t known each other for long, having only met this year, but it feels like it’s been forever… as you can imagine whilst on a rowing shift and someone is using the bucket  right next to you at 2.00am in the morning!

Aileen works as a personal trainer and massage therapist by day and can be seen to be drinking a Purple Guinness or two by night, whilst planning our team workouts.

Corrine is all things tech. By trade a photographer / producer, but in general the biggest social butterfly you will ever know, with all the contacts to the right people. If you want to get into a party, Corrine is your gal.

Daisy works as a civil servant by day and has switched her hobby of wining and dining to rowing on the erg most evenings when she's not able to get out for a cycle.

Jess has taken a year off working on yachts abroad and has based herself by the sea in Devon. She has spent most of her time in the yard at Exmouth marina making sure our boat ‘Catch of the Day’ is ready for the Atlantic!

This challenge is a huge undertaking, one that is completed by fewer people than Everest. This will be an experience of a lifetime and completely trumps the other challenges we have each participated in. We are very much looking forward to testing our minds and bodies together across the ocean, in aid of raising money for charity.

We will be going ‘Full Throttle' across the Atlantic and cannot wait for you to track our progress via the YB Races App.

World Vision - Ukraine

The escalation of conflict in Ukraine has forced more than 8 million border crossings, as mostly women and children flee to neighbouring countries, sometimes returning home during moments of relative peace, only to have to flee once again. At the end of June, 5 million people had fled Ukraine and registered in European countries. With the escalating crisis, the casualties and the number of displaced families, their needs are growing by the hour. More than two-thirds of Ukraine's children have either fled for safety within the country or are living as refugees.

Since the conflict started, the World Vision team has been on the ground assessing and responding to the urgent needs of those searching for safety. They are working to support internally displaced people in Ukraine as well as refugees in Romania, Georgia and Moldova.

World Vision has focused their work on collaborating with local partners in Ukraine and Moldova to provide food, hygiene and protection for children and their families.

In Romania, World Vision are providing safe spaces for children to play and receive care, and supporting the shelters in urban centres that are providing temporary homes for refugee children and their families.

Please donate now to support children and families affected by the crisis in Ukraine.
