Story
Mount Fuji.
At 3,776 meters tall, it's Japan's tallest mountain, standalone, vast and beautiful. And, on May 11, 2019*, I'll be attempting a full sea to summit of it.
This will be no ordinary sea to summit. Instead it'll be what I believe is a first, combining my favorite three sports — cycling, mountaineering and skiing — to get to the top and back in time for tea.
I'll start at midnight, cycling the 50 odd kilometers and 2,400 vertical meters from the coast to the trail head, before meeting the rest of the team (Sam Beer and Richie Taylor), donning our winter packs at sunrise and ascending the remaining 1,376 meters to the summit with skis on our backs. We'll then ski down (the fun bit) and I'll complete the journey by cycling back to the coast. That's the plan anyway.
The total elevation change from sea to summit is over 4,000 meters vertical and I reckon it'll take me about 14 to 15 hours total making it at least 4 times as hard as marathon...
I haven't done a fundraiser for a while and would greatly appreciate any donations to Cool Earth (https://www.coolearth.org), a non-profit that works alongside rainforest communities in Peru, the DRC and Papua New Guinea to halt deforestation and climate change.
According to Giving What We Can in 2016, Cool Earth is "the most cost-effective charity we have identified to date which works on mitigating climate change through direct action" (https://www.givingwhatwecan.org/report/cool-earth). Also David Attenborough likes it.
Thank you very much.
