A group of us from Summit are running the Oxford Town and Gown, which we got involved in through our work developing new utrophin modulator treatments for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).
DMD is a muscle-wasting condition caused by the lack of a protein called dystrophin. It usually affects only boys. About 100 boys with DMD are born in the UK each year and there are about 2,500 boys and young men known to be living with the condition in the UK at any one time. DMD is a serious condition that causes progressive muscle weakness. In the early stages, boys with DMD show signs of muscle weakness, such as difficulties running, jumping, climbing stairs and getting up from the floor. With the progression of the muscle weakness, boys become unable to walk as far or as fast as other children, and may fall down. Boys will usually need a wheelchair by the age of about eight to 11 years (MDUK).
Life expectancy is typically reduced to the late twenties. There is currently no cure.
