Solent swim 2023 · 23 July 2023 to 23 September 2023 ·

Every two hours someone in the UK is paralysed by a spinal cord injury. It can happen to anyone at any time and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire is a national charity that provides practical help, supporting spinal cord injured people from injury to independence.

Story

Hi , my name is Freya and I’m a year 13 student at Robert Smyth Academy and a member of Leicester Neptune Swimming Club where I train several times a week.

In September, I'm taking part in a challenge involving swimming across the Solent from Gosport to the Isle of Wight.

This is a challenging crossing due to the tide and swell and a fairly hectic shipping lane. My aim is to really push myself and weather and tide permitting, complete the Solent challenge in just over an hour!

Things to watch out for:

  • Water temperatures between 14 & 18 degrees
  • Stinging Jellyfish
  • Potential rough seas
  • Floating debris and thick seaweed
  • Dodging more than the odd pleasure craft
  • No wet suit, just swimsuit, hat and goggles
  • Wrestling seals......okay maybe just waving at them.

I'm raising money for Aspire as I really want to try and help make a difference to the lives of those who sustain such awful injuries.

Please help me raise as much money as possible for this great cause.
