Story
At 5pm on the 28th April 2023 I will be running 100 miles from Chichester to Hastings. This is a 100 mile foot race that I aim to finish in 29 hrs.
You can live track my race here: https://live.opentracking.co.uk/100ba23/
To add to my pain and misery I will also be wearing a set of Army issued body armour with ballistic plates weighing 10kg. This will not only sap my legs but will also add to rubbing and body heat issues. This is also a WORLD RECORD attempt and I aim to do it as quickly as possible.
I served in Iraq and three tours of Afghanistan before being wounded myself. I also lost many friends fighting over there or to suicide on their return due to what they experienced. I am putting myself through this very painful experience for those veterans who can't physically or mentally run anymore and to raise money for SSAFA The Armed Forces Charity. They support not only veterans of all three armed forces in need but also serving men and woman and their families, all of which are affected by what the soldiers, sailors and airman experience while deployed.
Mental Health and PTSD leading to suicide caused more Falkland's war veterans deaths than the war itself. This shameful statistic is likely to repeat itself with Iraq and Afghanistan veterans if the right help isn't there to support them.
I am raising money for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. SSAFA, has been providing lifelong support to our Forces and their families since 1885. Last year our teams of volunteers and employees helped more than 79,500 people in need, from Second World War veterans to young men and women who have served in more recent conflicts, and their families.
Ask any serving or veteran about SSAFA and they will tell you that they helped them, their family or a friend at some point when they were in need.
I attempted this record last year but ended up running on one of the hottest days of the heatwave. I ran 84miles in 21hrs before suffering with heat stroke, largely due to the body armour holding all my body heat in. I was forced to withdraw from that race which is why I am re-doing it in early 2023.
This is a World Record attempt but Guinness is very slow in responding unless paid large sums of money. So I will be checked and monitored by numerous witnesses who will document that I carried the full weighted body armour, for the full 100 miles, within the time limit.
