Story
I'm running the London Marathon on the 2nd October 2022 for Maggie's in memory of my dad David, who lost his battle to Oesophageal cancer on the 26th March 2021.
Unfortunately my dad started to display a lot of symptoms when the pandemic first broke out and was denied access to the NHS until later on in the year. Following some extensive investigations, he was diagnosed with stage IV metastatic oesophageal cancer in November 2020. The cancer had spread to the lymph nodes, liver, lumbar bones, pelvis and various other vital organs.
He was fitted with a stent twice, offered a few rounds of radiotherapy to help with his pain management and to consider palliative chemotherapy. After only 2 or 3 rounds of chemo, he had to stop because of some adverse reactions, ending up in hospital for weeks on end. In the 5 months from diagnosis to end of life, we saw our dad only a handful of times.
Watching somebody you love suffer and deteriorate so quickly, whilst trying to remain strong and optimistic for them, has been the most challenging task I have ever faced.
Cancer destroys lives & 1 in 2 people will get cancer in their lifetime. Not only does it impact the patient but the whole family suffer with them too. This is why I am running the London Marathon for Maggie's Charity.
Maggie's provide free support for people living with cancer and their families through a multitude of ways.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story and I would greatly appreciate any donation you are able to make
Fred xoxo
