What does it mean to you to experience joy in the outdoors?
For me, it's less about crafting an experience to remember forever, finding the perfect picture at a scenic vista, or finding that once-in-a lifetime adventure.
For me, it's the peaceful feeling of the first morning cup of campfire coffee, when the sun is just up and the birds are still finishing their morning songs. It's sitting with friends over a simple meal after a walk in the park. It's a family day at the beach, and running into friends unexpectedly.
I sit on the board of Justice Outside because I believe everyone should have the opportunity to find their joy and community in nature. Yet for People of Color, access to those spaces has not always been equitable, welcoming, or safe. We know that when People of Color explore the outdoors and take up space, while connecting to natural spaces and each other, it is a radical act. Explore-A-Thon is our annual reminder of the things we are fighting so deeply for.
Join me this summer in supporting Explore-A-Thon, Justice Outside's annual summer campaign to raise funds for our racial justice work and celebrate Black, Indigenous, and People of Colors joy in the outdoors! Over the course of the campaign, from June 22 to July 31st, I encourage you to get outside, explore, experience radiant joy, and find ways to authentically connect with the outdoors, each other, and Justice Outside. #JusticeOutside #WeAreJusticeOutside #ExploreJoyAndJustice
