We support families bereaved by suicide to offer comfort during this difficult time

Story

At the start of the year, we lost Poppy & Jayne to suicide. They left a huge hole in our hearts. They were both so unique & cool! I know they would both appreciate me braving the shave to help others.

I will be shaving my hair on the 02.01.2023, lovely Jacob from Barnwood Barbers will be helping.

They would love the idea of the funky hairstyles as my hair grows out & bright colours. It feels like the perfect way to honour them & heal.

Sunflowers is founded by people who know the pain and trauma of losing a loved one to suicide, to offer support to others who are bereaved or affected by suicide.

Bereavement by suicide is particularly traumatic. In addition to powerful feelings of grief, people can struggle with anger, guilt and confusion.

Initial feelings are often shock, numbness and disbelief. This type of grief can lead to invasive thoughts and flashbacks.

In the early days post loss, those bereaved may not fully take in or comprehend what is being said or done.

Often the circumstances of the loss will be complex and traumatic having a profound effect on their lives. There may be questions unanswered and things left unsaid. This can often haunt those left behind as they try to make sense of what has happened

About the charity

Sunflowers was created in memory of Pete Morris who died by suicide in 2016. His family developed the Charity to walk alongside others bereaved by suicide and to be a small ray of light in the darkness; offering others comfort and support that is so desperately needed at such a difficult time. Sunflowers endeavour to provide other families with practical and professional support so they do not feel overwhelmed and alone. This we hope will give a glimmer of hope for the future. Sunflowers also raise awareness around mental health and suicide both on social media and by networking locally and nationally. We deliver accredited training to the wider community and presentations sharing our story. We highlight that it is Okay to not be ‘Okay’ and the importance of talking and of course listening. We feel that everyone can play a small part in connecting with and helping others to feel less alone.
