We empower young people to achieve their potential

Story

Hi all, Alex here.

On the 2nd of January this year I lost one of my best friends- Rob Broadhurst. He was involved in a car accident that resulted in his life being cut short at the age of 24. It was his birthday just the week before, on the 27th of December. He was a popular young man with a huge life force that touched everyone he met.

This time of year is one normally filled with good will, positivity and good times. As you can imagine this year will be different. Not a day has gone by since Rob passed away that I have not thought of him. He is survived by his Parents, Sisters and other close family, and also his partner Emma. I am sure that this period of time will be even more difficult for them.

In a week that Rob will be on the minds of myself and those that knew him, I felt that to use such a difficult time as a force for good would not only be a good way for us to be supporting each other, but also a fantastic way to commemorate a fantastic persons life.

The What Centre! is a charity that offers many FREE services to young people and I have been receiving counselling there to help me attempt to come to terms with losing my best friend. They are based in Stourbridge and many people will be familiar with them. They are constantly battling to stay open and always seem to be having their funding cut. It is for these reasons that I have decided to raise money for them.

The plan: 24 workouts in 24 hours. Every hour on the hour we will perform a different workout based at the Crossfit gym I attend- Crossfit Rudis. This allows for those who can only come in and do a few workouts, to do so, and those of us that are crazy enough to do all 24, to all be challenged.

If you want to come down and join in and support us then please feel free. I want this to be a celebration of Rob's life and energy.

The What? Centre has been providing an essential advice and counselling service for young people for 30 years and its reputation grows year by year. Our Mission Statement is to provide a high quality, client centred service for young people mainly between the ages of 13 and 25. Over the years The Centre has provided a much-used advice service for local young people on a range of issue from sexual health, housing, employment and benefits. Our highest acclaim is our reputation with professionals such as GPs, CCGs, colleges and schools for our provision of therapeutic counselling services, which is provided by a range of qualified personnel. The Centre is BACP accredited. The need for this service emanates from a range of issues including physical and sexual abuse, drug abuse, domestic/family problems, exclusion from school, peer pressure and bereavement. Such issues can lead to depression, anxiety/stress, severe anger, loss of self-esteem/confidence, eating disorders, self-harm and thoughts - or even attempts - of suicide. The Centre is a registered charity and all funding is by way of grants, service level agreements and donations. However, demand far outstrips our funding so continually have to apply for funding and all donations are very gratefully received.
