Over the last 3 years we have been working with the Komfo Anoyke Hospital in Ghana and have grown a deep association and love of this unit. Ten of their staff also came over to spend a month with us at James Cook Hospital last year before we in turn went back to their unit as we work to set them up as a heart surgery unit for the whole of northern Ghana.
Mamadel Delphine is the senior ICU nurse and the Rock of this unit in Ghana. She works tirelessly for the good of this unit, does the lion's share of caring for the heart surgery patients there and in her month with us was so enthusiastic to bring what she had learnt back to Ghana.
Last week tragically Mamadel lost her husband and is now alone in the world. Normally this would be tragic enough but in Ghana there is no social security, little in the way of pensions and little in the way of free healthcare.
In this time of Coronavirus we have all had our beliefs shaken in the UK that there will always be food on the shelves and that you can do what you like. Even more poignantly we can no longer rely with certainty on seeing our loved ones again, especially our elderly who may at any time be struck down by the virus.
But we live in a country that has everything we could possibly need free at the point of care. This is far from the case in Ghana where I have personally seen a young girl denied access to Intensive care treatment because there was not a relative available who could pay for the first night of care. In this country, If you cannot provide for yourself there is nobody to help. If you are unwell then aside from the most basic of investigations, you must pay yourself. It is not just the elderly that you must worry about in Ghana.
We are dedicated to helping this unit and in memory of Mamadel's Husband and in order to help the unit she loves, we are raising money to help them provide the best care possible in Ghana, whether this be mending the 8 broken ventilators in this hospital, or providing new equipment for this unit and to continue the vital work of setting up this unit to provide much needed heart surgery for people in their 20s to 40s.
We are very grateful for any help you can give and we guarantee that this money will be worth 7 times its value in Ghana. This money goes towards the Arrhythmia Alliance - Hearts of Ghana appeal that is dedicated to supporting this unit.
Please also send a message of support to Mamadel with your donation to support her and please also pass on this message to anyone who may be interested in helping too.
Many thanks
