Story
Those who know me, know i don't run. Never have i even managed to run for even a mile. Those who know me, know about my son (who has severe Autism) and how, although i make no secret about how difficult it can be, i don't often show just how hard the struggle is. The silent tears, hiding from meltdowns in the bathroom, the excessive planning, the hideous looks and mostly the complete pain and frustration of not understanding my sons mind. I can't work due to lack of support and funding. This often makes me wonder what I've done to make my mini people proud.
Hence Bubbles night. A night i drank a little too much Prosecco. My daughter announces that i am "Just a Mummy"
.......just a mummy. I know she didn't realise how much of a cord that struck. So out comes my tipsy random announcement "I want to run a marathon....... no, i want to run the London Marathon!"
I am more than "just a mummy" stuck in a box with Autism. I was going to show my daughter i could and i would.
What you may also not know is my brother in-law Lee also had a disability. I never met him, yet often wonder how different our family would be if he were here.
Lee had Muscular Dystrophy. A muscle disease. It results in increasing weakening and breakdown of skeletal muscles over time.
Lee passed away from this when he was 16 years old.
So whist showing myself that i can do this along with my daughter that being "just a mummy" you can still do "the impossible" I want to do something for Lee and the Scholey Gang. As really without their support 5 seconds away from Autism wouldn't be possible. Having experienced first hand how having a family member with a disability can affect every aspect of your life, i know just how important research, support and guidance such as given fromMuscular Dystrophy UK is imperative.
