Story
When
On 22nd July Stuart and Gary will walk 26 miles from Millwall F.C to Wembley to raise money for Prostate Cancer. This walk (Gary being made of glass can’t manage any further or more strenuous) should take between 8 and 9 hours and goes through Crystal Palace, Fulham, Chelsea and QPR football clubs.
(Surely it’s worth sponsorship alone knowing Stuart has to spend that amount of time with Gary)
Why Prostate Cancer?
In the UK, 1 in 8 men in their live time will be diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. On a daily basis 129 men are diagnosed with Prostate Cancer and one man dies every 45 minutes from the disease. Prostate Cancer can show no symptoms until it’s too late.
Gary’s Dad has had over 20 eye operations in his lifetime. On one of his trips to the GP for a follow up appointment, the GP asked my Dad had ever had a PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test. Unfortunately, the test came back positive for prostate cancer, but due to early discovery, vigilance from the GP and treatment my Dad has thankfully made a full recovery. As the stats show above, some men aren’t so lucky.
Stu and Gary want to do this walk to raise money for awareness to allow for earlier diagnosis and treatment, and if not the case to provide more research into treatment for more advanced stages of the cancer.
Ultimately if reading this makes any man go and have a test for prostate cancer, regardless of the outcome, then part of the job is done!
Why March to the Arch?
The prostate cancer badge has graced the lapel of almost every football manager and pundit in recent years. Now, the same 'Man of Men' logo appears in the squad number of every player's shirt in the EFL and Prostate Cancer UK features in the famous computer games Football Manager and Fifa 2018. Prostate Cancer will kill two men during the time it takes to complete a football match
Gary and his Dad have been to 40 league grounds and travelled over 29,000 miles watching Reading F.C. and have shared some memories (good and bad) at grounds Stuart and Gary are walking too so it seemed right to revisit these places whilst raising money for an amazing cause.
