Hello!

My name is Fiona and I am from the lovely county of Lincolnshire – we are nestled on the East coast about half way up England in case you’ve never visited. You might have heard of us in the context of intensive food production and perhaps have an image of flat fields full of cabbages and sprouts? It’s true that our county is important when it comes to feeding everyone but you might not know that we are home to some really cool wildlife, some beautiful landscapes, and some incredible people who look after it all.

During lockdown many of us realised just how important wildlife
and having a connection to it and green places really is. Wildlife was there for us when we needed  it most. However, a year on our wildlife and the places that they call home now need our help more than ever. Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust has always been there for nature; they’ve got its back and always will have. They are having a tough time raising funds at the minute though as their visitor centres and cafes have been closed, and their volunteers have not been able to run fundraising events – yet their wardens and conservation staff have kept working (in a safe way) to protect the species and places that we all love and get so much enjoyment from.

I wanted to do something to help as my local Wildlife Trust
has always been a big part of my life; from providing those precious early memories of getting up close and personal with nature at Whisby Nature Reserve, to pond dipping and chasing insects at Snipe Dales on a school trip and then volunteering with them as an adult and learning so much from their incredibly knowledgeable
and passionate staff. As a charity, they do an incredible amount with relatively few resources and they cover an enormous county!

So, my aim is to walk the whole Viking Way from Oakham in
the south to the banks of the River Humber in the north – 147 miles in total
. I am not a sporty or ‘fit’ person so this will be a proper challenge for me!  I will give myself 12 days to do this and will call in to important wildlife sites and chat to Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers along the route too. I’ll aim to share everything on
social media so that you can all explore my home county with me – with help from the lovely communications team at Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust!

My aims are:

  1. Raise awareness of Lincolnshire’s cool wildlife and
show off our scenic places to change perceptions of my home county
  2. Raise funds for Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust to
carry on doing the amazing work they do
  3. Get fit by giving myself a big physical task to achieve
and hopefully inspire others to get their boots on too

Please donate what you can afford and help to spread the
word about my mission far and wide! Thank you so much :)
