Wild Atlantic Marathon, 26 April 2022
We fund research and provide support to children and adults affected by cancer

Story

Hi everyone Able or not, we are putting on the runners again, but this time for a really good cause. My mad sisters and I are taking on the wild Atlantic marathon on the 12th of June 2022 to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society, in particular, their night nurses section, something we benefited greatly from last summer when our Dad was very sick. It meant that his final days were spent at home in Straleel, where he was happiest, surrounded by all of us, his extended family, and many visitors. This meant the world to everybody, because we know he was where he wanted to be, in his own home. We were blessed with our fantastic night nurse, who stayed with dad every night for just over a week. She looked after him and she carried the rest of us on her shoulders too. There are no words for the sense of calm and the level of care she brought through the door each evening - she is simply the best night nurse you could hope for. Practically, having a dedicated professional by our sides who could administer pain relief and who knew what to do in every situation, in the dark hours, took the pressure of “getting it wrong” off us and gave us the confidence to face the next day. The Irish Cancer Society night nurse service is funded almost entirely by donations, including funds raised from daffodil day. Donegal, like other parts of the country is a remote county, the service is possibly needed in these areas more than others. In rural Ireland night nurses cover a massive area which can mean that if several families need support at any given time some may have to do without. Anyone who has availed of this service knows how amazing it is, we hope therefore that our journey to Glen will in some way support the nurses and the families who need them soon. We are asking all of you to please share the hell out of this post and to donate some money, any amount of money (nothing is too little) for the daffodil nurses. We are not promising any record-breaking marathon times as anyone who knows the route knows how many hills there are, but we will do our best, to run / walk the 26.2 miles remembering Dad along the way - even if we have to crawl.
