Story
A few years ago my Grandad was diagnosed with terminal cancer. His health deteriorated quickly and as a family we soon learnt that small touches and personal care can make a massive difference when it comes to getting through such a hard time.
When he was moved to the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham everything became just that little bit easier. The hospice is the only one in the area and, more than that, it's one of the few places that can provide patients and their families with the specialist care they need when facing the end of a life.
This level of expertise doesn't come cheaply - the hospice relies on donations to stay open - each week their running costs are around £10,000. This pays for just 18 in-patients at a time.
Grandad was with Phyllis Tuckwell for 14 days. Each day they cared for him (and looked after us) cost them £350. In total, his stay cost them just under £5000.
My mum, my aunt and I want to repay this 'debt' and have decided to walk 10 miles, across country, in the dark, starting at midnight on September 11th.
We'd love it if you could spare a few pounds to help us reach our fund-raising target so that more families like us can benefit from the brilliant care offered by Phyllis Tuckwell.
We all know it would have been much harder without them - and that just being there helped to make Grandad's last days much more comfortable.
I'm pretty sure that if he could see us now he'd probably think we've all gone a bit nutty and would spend all night worrying about us... so any tips on how to get through the night, or kind offers of moonlit cheering are also appreciated!
