Story
I am putting on my walking boots and heading up Snowdon with my bro, Eoin, to mark the 5 year anniversary since he was diagnosed with a brain tumour in June 2017. A chance to challenge ourselves, make some memories and raise some cash for this amazing charity.
I still remember the evening Eoin called me to say he had just seen a scan of his brain and it was 25% tumour. Within 10 days he was in surgery, having the brain tumour removed, awake for the majority of the operation. I can’t imagine how scary that was, never mind at 33 with a wife and 2 children under 3.
Eoin then went through 30 session of radiotherapy and a year of chemo. Not all of his tumour has been removed due to the location. Every six months he has a scan and we keep everything crossed that the consultant says “no change.”
The staggering statistic is only 12% of adults survive for 5 years after a brain tumour diagnosis. Despite this, treatments haven’t changed in 40 years and research into brain tumours is still woefully underfunded. In fact, just 3% of the money spent each year on cancer research in the UK is spent on brain tumours.
So to mark my bro’s 5 year diagnosis anniversary we are ‘putting our positive pants on’ (as my bro says) and walking up Snowdon to raise as much money as we can to drive research into treatments that will change those statistics
