So why did I decide to raise money for a Bowel Cancer UK?
Bowel cancer, or colorectal cancer, to give it its Sunday name, gets very little attention, especially compared to the pink ribbons and moustaches associated with other forms of cancer, but it's a lot more common than you'd think.
Bowel cancer is the second most common cancer in women and the third most common in men in the UK.
It's the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the western world. These are pretty alarming statistics.
I have no personal story to tell - I don't have bowel cancer and nor does anyone in my family. I see bowel cancer as a bit of an underdog in terms of cancer awareness and I think it's about time it got the kind of attention and money that such a common and deadly disease deserves. And doesn't everyone always root for the underdog?
I'm hoping to complete the Stonehaven Half Marathon in under two hours. It'll be my first half marathon and only my third ever competitive race. The thought of raising money for this cause will keep me motivated so please give us much as you can.
