Story
I don't really have a story, but so many others do...
Sepsis is the body's overwhelming and life threatening response to infection that can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and death. It's treatable but still kills 52,000 people a year in the UK. It can initially look like flu, a stomach bug, chest infection - there's no one sign - and that is why raising awareness is so important to me.
Brave families have lost loved ones (infants through to adults).
Courageous Sepsis Survivors battle daily with the emotional, physical and financial problems left by having experienced this condition and don't know how or where to get assistance or help.
I have seen this courage first hand through my dear friend Lisa and her amazing, supportive family. She is considered 'lucky' to be a sepsis survivor yet I don't have the space here to describe the adversity she still encounters each day.
I have another friend who is awaiting a major operation after having sepsis and the whole thing is very traumatic for the family.
Many others, young and old, have suffered life changing complications or died. It can affect any one of us.
Donating and raising awareness will help the Sepsis Trust to support sufferers and their families and provide education and resources to healthcare professionals to recognise this condition early on.
Please support my challenge. If you can't donate, please share this story and the symptoms below:
Adults - Slurred speech or confusion, Extreme shivering or muscle pain, Passing no urine (in a day), Severe breathlessness, It feels like you're going to die, Skin mottled or discoloured
Children - if your child is unwell with either a fever or very low temperature, call NHS and just ask, "Could it be sepsis?"
Children under 5 may have sepsis if he or she 1. is not feeding 2. is vomiting repeatedly 3. hasn't passed urine in 12 hours
If you can't donate, please share this. Awareness is key.
Thank you
