Story
I hope to raise £700 for the Rifcom charity by trekking 100km through the High Atlas Mountains – North Africa’s tallest range. The trek will start near the plains of Marrakech and finish in the Sahara Desert itself.
The trek takes place over 4 days and is led by an experienced team of Berber mountain guides.
RifCom is a Gibraltar-based, non-profit charity run by committed volunteers trying to help impoverished rural communities in Northern Morocco, particularly Chefchaouenin in the Rif Mountains.
RifCom aims to:
• Develop Rif community projects addressing, amongst other things, education, health, conservation and waste disposal
• Establish a community centre in the heart of the Rif to facilitate various projects and sources of income (micro economy), for example rural tourism.
• Form a model for future sustainable development communities
The RifCom team are currently working on (and need funds for) the following projects:
• Renovation for schools such as building playgrounds & toilets; fixing roofs and replacing windows
• Vocational youth training courses; informal schooling for children; reading/writing courses for women
• Provision for young girls from Talembote to board in a safe and secure house in order to continue their secondary education which would otherwise not be available to them. (The rural villages do not have secondary schools and the children need to travel and board in the nearest large town to attend secondary school. Most parents cannot afford this.)
• Donating computers to rural schools • Collecting clothing and wet weather gear for rural communities
• Orgainising sporting events (football tournaments in particular) to help build friendships and trust
Please support by giving whatever you can.
Many thanks,
Fiona xx
