Story
The Kasanka Trust conserves and protects the unique habitats and wildlife of the Kasanka National Park in Zambia, home to the largest migration of mammals on earth (10 million fruit bats can't be wrong!). The Park currently faces unprecedented levels of threats from land grabs, deforestation, poaching and the illegal deliberate setting of fires to drive out wildlife.
I was offered a ticket to this half marathon 3 weeks from race day. Having not trained (yet!) I've got my work cut out. But I couldn't turn down the opportunity to fund raise for Kasanka. The main aim is to contribute to the sponsorship of a young Zambian to become trained in conservation. For example, after finishing his degree, Alison Simpanzye undertook an internship at Kasanka, supported by Bats without Borders. He has received training in bat surveys from Merlin Tuttle and Daniel Hargreaves when they recently visited Kasanka, and has worked with Kasanka Trust on camera trap surveys, fire control strategies and other vital skills. Sadly, without external support, there are very few opportunities Alison, or people like him, to continue with their ambitions to work in wildlife conservation.
The Park and its Wildlife need the skills and enthusiasm of people like Alison. The information they collect will also be vital in fighting the ongoing legal battles to enforce the protection of the Park.
Your gift, however small, will go a long way!
Thank you.
