Debbie Hawke has been my treasured friend and sidekick for over 20 years. In more recent years, we started exercising together too.
Debs was diagnosed with breast cancer in May '18, aged 40. She underwent chemo, an operation, then radiotherapy, between June '18 and March '19.
The Primrose Suite, Burnley General Hospital, was the unit where Debs had her gruelling course of chemotherapy. Her experience at the Primrose Suite was as positive as it could have been. Debs often told stories of how much of a laugh she had there, and what a comfortable place it was to be during her hardest course of treatment.
She beat cancer. Of course. Debs is a force to be reckoned with, as those who know her are well aware.
I ran with Debs on her first post-cancer run and was filled with pride to see her getting her strength back (see picture 😍).
Debs and friends walked a 26 mile hike for charity last summer.
I didn't take part because I'm just not a fan of walking. I said that I would rather run it than walk it.....
So, I've decided to complete a 100 miles in a month running challenge. I had a little practice in August, when I had far more time, and sunshine on my side! I found it quite tough. However, I feel blessed to be in good health and feel inspired by Debs' grit two years ago.
I'm raising money for the Primrose Suite at her request. Money raised will go a little way to enhance their services and support, particularly at a time when fundraising is difficult and the heath service is so stretched.
You never know when you or a loved one may suddenly need cancer treatment. We certainly didn't see this coming two years ago.
Thank you for reading.
