This year I was fortunate enough (or crazy enough) to secure ballot places in both the London and Chicago Marathons.  This means that I will be training pretty much all year long....

I have been nursing since 1989, when I trained at Guys and St Thomas' hospital.  In those days I never thought that I would become a career nurse; I simply wanted  a job that I knew I would enjoy.  

I have been so fortunate with my profession, working with some inspirational leaders who had faith in my ability and encouraged me to keep developing and learning.  My career has followed many paths, including; specialising in Cardiothoracic nursing; training as a nurse practitioner; and working as a clinical educator before choosing to take a managerial path working  up to my current role as Deputy Director of Nursing at the Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospitals.

Working in leadership roles in the NHS I understand how not all nurses have been as fortunate as myself and that hardship and adversity can affect nurses, midwives and healthcare assistants when they least expect it.  The Cavell Nurses Trust is a great charity that can support nurses both registered and unregistered during these challenging times.

2020 is the Year of the Nurse and Midwife and this seems like a golden opportunity for me to be thankful for the amazing career that I have had.  The London Marathon is famous for runners raising money for charity and so for me this doubleathon, seems like the perfect opportunity to raise money for fellow nurses who may not have been as fortunate as myself.
