Fiona's Marathon Challenge

London Marathon 2023 · 23 April 2023 ·
I suffered a brain haemorrhage in 2019. Although I was fortunate to experience a remarkable recovery, the residual effects (including auditory processing disorder, aphasia and fatigue) knocked my confidence, and I worried about how or if I would be able to return to work in 2020.
Mencap were amazing. I was lucky enough to join their colleagues in January 2021, and straight away they provided the support and flexibility to help me re-adjust to the workplace. They see beyond the disabilities and were able to encourage me to do the same. My colleagues at Mencap provide me with helpful tips, schedule adjustments, and - most importantly - a friendly environment!
My experience working with Mencap has helped me find my “old self” again, and I would love to support the organisation so that they can continue to support others in the way they’ve helped me.
Right now, people with a learning disability face inequalities in every area of life, with almost 1 in 3 young people with a learning disability spending less than 1 hour outside their home on a typical Saturday. They face barriers to finding a job, accessing activities in their local community and receiving good quality healthcare.
We tackle these issues head-on by providing support in a way that meets individual needs and encourages greater independence. We give expert advice and information that empowers people and their families. And we campaign relentlessly for changes that bring greater equality for people with a learning disability.
By supporting Team Mencap you will be helping us to support people with a learning disability to live the life they choose and do the things they love.
