Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. The picture provides a glimpse of some of the medical devices required on a daily basis along with our JDRF teddy given to us when he was diagnosed…
A year ago this month I took my 11yr son to the GP, concerned due to his palor and increasingly skeletal frame. It was the height of covid lockdown but I managed to convince the doctor to have a face to face . I had thought I would be quickly dismissed as an over anxious mother but the visit quickly resulted in us being sent directly to a&e.
It wasn’t long before he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. There were lots of tears as my son blamed himself for perhaps eating too many sweets, this from one of the healthiest sporty boys around…I tried to hide mine unsuccessfully..
We were taken care of immediately by an amazing diabetes team in Lewisham hospital and within the day we were sent home with lots of information, diabetes pens for injecting and insulin…
I can’t begin to explain the number of sleepless nights since then, checking insulin levels throughout the night, stuffing jelly babies in the mouth of a half sleeping child to get out of a hypo, or giving emergency injections for hyperspace…but despite this I feel extremely lucky.
Our brilliant care team have helped us secure support for Sean in the form of devices that real time read his insulin levels and feed in insulin directly through a needle in his tummy. Sean has managed it bravely and we all track and monitor everything he eats to support this.
Although we are thankful for the technology we have, we are also hopeful that one day there will be a cure to help people with this currently incurable life long condition.
Interestingly the period during covid has seen a spike in children diagnosed with this condition…
Charities like JDRF do amazing work with research to help make a cure a reality whilst supporting those in the type 1 diabetes community.
Please help me to help them find a cure….
