Story
On Saturday 18 September our friend Finn McCowen will undertake an expedition in the Lake District.
Finn is nine, loves being outside and is up for any outdoor activity going.
He has cerebral palsy, which means he can’t walk.
To help prevent the problems this can lead to, he needs a clever bit of kit called an Innowalk, a sort of cross-trainer which allows him to weight bear.
It costs £27,000 and is not currently funded by the NHS.
We, his family and friends, will need to carry him and/or push him in his buggy for a 27km route (almost 18 miles) centring on the beautiful Duddon Valley.
We hope to raise £1,000 for each kilometre of the expedition.
We are mustering 27 of Finn’s friends, and friends of friends - all children and young people - together with his brother Theo and lots of Finn’s cousins, to share the load (literally!).
Please give generously (don't forget to Gift Aid your donation) and spread the word far and wide!
Many thanks.
More information about the Innowalk:
The Innowalk will enable Finn to walk without any adult help every day at home. As well as feeling lovely to be upright and moving, walking is crucial for healthy hip development. Dynamic weight bearing (offered by the Innowalk) allows Finn's hips to develop properly.
Without the equipment to help him walk, the risk of hip dislocation meant Finn was expected to need major surgery. After such surgery, it would take a year to regain his original strength and movement, with no guarantee of a full recovery. But, having used a small size Innowalk for five years, his hips have stabilised and orthopaedic surgeon now believes surgery will not be necessary.
Finn has outgrown his small Innowalk and now needs the larger size. Without the ongoing daily walking he has enjoyed in his Innowalk, Finn's health will deteriorate. He needs the next Innowalk for hip development, bone density, good organ and respiratory health, muscle strengthening and flexibility - and the sheer pleasure of being out of a wheelchair, upright and moving!
