Story

Chart-topping and award winning Irish classically trained singer and songwriter Victoria Johnston is partnering with registered Irish charity Fields of Life in fundraising to roll out a pilot programme called 'Music for Life' for 2 Fields of Life schools in Uganda. 100% of all donations raised will go directly to fund this 'Music for Life' programme.

This fundraiser and pilot programme will require the procurement of music instruments to facilitate the teaching of music education and your donation will directly impact 300 boys and 380 girls at Good Shepherd and Nakapinyi Primary school in Central Uganda.

Local Ugandan specialised music teachers, and the 2 Ugandan school's head teachers will run this Music for Life programme and will educate students in playing music instruments, music theory, composition and music performance of traditional Ugandan and Christian music in an orchestral group setting in these 2 Ugandan primary schools. It will also help educate 18 local teachers at these 2 schools in music education. This Music for Life programme will look to promote the joy of music, friendship, a sense of belonging, teamwork, commitment, responsibility and mutual respect.

As a music educator herself in Ireland, Victoria has seen the benefits that music education and learning instruments provides for both adults and young people and contacted Fields of Life suggesting the positive contribution that a music programme could bring to some of their schools.

Instruments for each school will include: Drums, Xylophones, Uganda tube fiddles, shakers, flutes, guitars, bangles, rattles, Uganda trumpets, bells and 1 piano per school. These instruments will all be purchased locally in Uganda to support the local economy.

Many schools in Uganda focus on producing academic results only, where school systems strive to implement mandated standards to help students excel in tests. In this worthwhile pursuit, many creative schools programs such as art and music are deemed unnecessary and cut from the curriculum.

You can help us change this fact and provide an outlet for young people to explore their creative talents through music. With your financial support you can help create a love of music as a medium of learning in 2 Fields of Life partner schools in Central Uganda through this Music for Life programme.

It is vastly recognised and proven that music education benefits intellectual development  creativity and personal and social development. Key positive factors in musical training relay a sense of achievement, self-discipline, increased self-esteem, self-expression and self-confidence which lend themselves to increased motivation. Many children find a sense of belonging in school music programmes.

Help us give the gift of music! Thank you!
