2020 has been grim for everyone, but some have suffered more than most, with Covid resulting in people losing their jobs, their health, their support networks and their homes. This Christmas, more than 200,000 families and individuals in England alone have found themselves sleeping on the streets, hunkering down in sheds or garages, sofa-surfing or stuck in totally unsuitable accommodation.
I'm incredibly lucky. I have a warm home, a wonderful family, a job I love and my health. This year has thrown up challenges, but one of the best things to come out of it for me has been outdoor swimming. With indoor pools closed, I have swum in lidos, lakes, rivers and the sea - and loved every minute of it.
I have never swum outdoors through the winter (I usually wimp out in November - and have donned a wetsuit long before then), but already it's 31st December and I'm still swimming in my cossie (this morning, the water at Brockwell Lido was a crisp 5.7 degrees, the air a frosty 0). This winter, I'd like to see if I can keep swimming as the temperatures drop further.
But I can choose to be cold. I have the luxury of warm clothes, drinks and food and a cosy home to return to. Which is why I'm facing the freeze for Crisis, who work hard to support people out of homelessness. Everyone deserves a home of their own. Please donate to my page while I take on this icy challenge to help end homelessness. Thank you.
