Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
The Charity have been a great support and help since Dad's diagnosis and I'm passionate about helping them to help others.
215 miles from Southport to Hornsea along the Trans Penine Trail, 8 full days riding ( a bit of carriage driving too on the road parts). It's going to be very challenging for both Billy my Fell pony and I, not only the journey it's self but the preparation, planning and fitness in the lead up to it.
This is something positive for me to concentrate on in some very hard times.
I can't fight the Cancer for Dad but I can fight to help others going through the same.
Training is now getting serious for the owner of Hound Helpers Ltd as she prepares to trek the 215-mile Trans Penine Trail to raise money for charity.
Starting at Southport and finishing 9 days later in Hornsea, Sarah Bartlett of Lower Moor and her ever faithful Fell pony, Billy are hoping their adventure will raise £5,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Explaining what’s involved in preparing for a 215 mile trek, Sarah said: “We have been preparing for a few months now with drives through town centres so Billy is prepared for some of the built up areas and speeding vehicles. We will keep the training varied, riding on different terrain, up and down hills and on the flat.
“Billy is fairly fit already and Fell ponies are a hardy breed, so a lot of our training will be to build up his endurance stamina as well as mine. It’s also important to keep Billy’s brain occupied and he loves jumping so we will be doing some show jumping as well.
Sarah, is raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support because she wanted to give back to the charity, for the support they have given family members.
“At Christmas, my dad was diagnosed with cancer of the kidney and has now been told its now terminal. I lost my step-father to cancer and my mum has also beaten breast cancer and Macmillan has been there for all of us throughout.
“Over recent months Dad has been in hospital a few times, taking some very hard dips in his health which was hard for all of us. “Fortunately, he has bounced back again and is on good form for the moment and we spent the bank holiday weekend at Llandudno festival of Transport with his vintage vehicles. We made some lovely memories and he was in his element.”
Sarah Diston, Macmillan Cancer Support fundraising manager for Worcestershire said: “Macmillan doesn’t receive government funding, we rely on the generosity of the public to help support our services and what Sarah, not forgetting the wonderful Billy are doing, is amazing.
Setting off Sarah will be supported on the trek by two friends and to keep costs down and to raise as much as possible for Macmillan Cancer Support, Sarah is seeking sponsorship support to help cover the costs of food and diesel for the lorry.
£28 could pay a macmillan nurse for an hour, helping people with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support.with cancer
£224 could help run a small Macmillan information and support centre for a day. This would mean more people affected by cancer would have someone to answer their questions and talk to about their concerns.
£450 could pay for a Macmillan professional to attend an advanced course in pain and symptom control. This would help the professional provide better advice to people with cancer on how to control their symptoms and deal with the pain caused by treatment.
£2,329 could pay for a Macmillan social worker or family support worker for a month. They work with community and social services agencies to help people manage the social and practical problems of living with cancer.
£4,917 could pay to run the welfare rights element of our phone service for a day. In this time, they could, on average, deal with 79 individual cases and help secure £191,834 in unclaimed benefits.
£10,000 could support a multi-disciplinary community of professionals, bringing them together to share expertise and work on joint projects for a year
Every little helps!
