Story
I am pleased to say it is all over and I DID IT!
I have never felt so much relief as when I finally saw and then passed the finishing line! I knew it was going to be hard work, but I hadn't really prepared myself for how much it was really going to hurt.
The only things which kept me going were:-
- My daughter, walking with me (not one moan or complaint even though she at the end of the walk would have been up for more than 24 hours. I more than made up for her!)
- Thinking about how I would break the news to everyone who had faith in me before the event and sponsored me!
The Lowlights
- Seeing someone receiving treatment for blisters at the two mile mark, ouch!
- Being told the next toilet break area was 'about 10 minutes away' THEY LIED! It actually took 35 minutes
- Twisting me knee at the 6 mile mark and thinking it could all be over
- The last three miles!
The Highlights
- The fantastic atmosphere on the night
- People who took the time to come out at 4 in the morning and thank us for doing it
- All the people in fancy dress; which included 4 smurfs, a bride in full dress including train, a troupe of caberet dancers, a pirate and her parrot (yes, another walker dressed as a parrot)
- The drunk party goers at 3 in morning on their way home, egging us all on
- The last 200 yards
I have met my personal challenge for taking part and completing the walk, I just want to ask you to help me meet my sponsorship target. I am not far off, so please dip into your pockets and donate to a worthy cause.
St Lukes Hospice are dedicated to providing highly specialised palliative and end of life care for patients who have terminal or life-limiting illnesses. When faced with the reality of coping with a terminal illness, many people say that the fear of having to handle pain and other distressing symptoms, as well as a possible loss of dignity, is what worries them the most. St Lukes support people and their loved ones at this dreadful time
To put this into context, the cost of a bed for one day is £438. So come on, help me and St Lukes, by donating just a bit more!
many thanks
Fay
Before the event
I must be mad! I am forty this year and decided I wanted take on a personal challenge and give something back to the community. The Himalayan trek or climb up Mount Everest aren't an option, so decided to start off a little smaller!
Anyone who knows me will quickly realise a 13 mile walk (regardless of the time of day or location) is going to be 'a bit of a challenge!' I have been lucky that my family, although touched by cancer and other illnesses, haven't needed St Lukes Hospice's support. Other families aren't not so fortunate.
