Story
Faringdon Young Farmers’ Club (YFC) will walk the entire 87.5 miles of the Ridgeway in 48 hours over the weekend of the 5, 6 and 7 May 2012 in aid of Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres. The challenge will be completed by two teams walking in relay with each individual completing at least 44 miles in 48 hours (walking day and night legs).
Faringdon YFC is raising funds for Maggie’s Centre in memory of two past members; Richard Berry and Lizzie Dagnall, who both sadly lost their lives to cancer. Richard was a local farmer and former Chairman of Faringdon and District YFC. Lizzie was a former Secretary of the club and fundamental in its re-establishment three years ago, despite her on-going battle against her illness. They are both sadly missed by all who knew them.
Maggie’s Centres are a national charity providing local support and advice to cancer patients and their families. Maggie’s offer free and comprehensive support to anyone affected by cancer by way of personally tailored information, psychological and emotional support programmes. They currently operate from a portacabin at the John Radcliff Hospital in Oxford. However, plans are underway to build a purpose built new centre on the site which will enable the charity to enhance the quality of the care to those they support. To enable the building work to be completed the charity needs to raise £3,000,000. By completing the Ridgeway Challenge, Faringdon YFC aims to raise a minimum of £10,000 to donate towards the building of the new centre.
