Story
I have stammered my whole life. Growing up wasn’t easy as a result. My confidence was non-existent and my school years were a challenging and negative experience as a result of the shame and embarrassment of my stammer. I felt like an inadequate person, never able to articulate myself the way I wanted or without fear of ridicule. My parents struggled to find support and resources on how to understand it or how to get me the support I needed.
Now, STAMMA are creating a better world for people who stammer. Committed to tackling public perceptions of what it means to stammer and remove the shame, stigma, intolerance and misunderstanding experienced by people who stammer.
STAMMA’s mission is to support anyone who stammers in the UK, we can live our lives in full and with dignity. They’re striving to create a world where people who stammer can fulfil their potential, and enjoy respect and consideration, and that’s why I want to do everything I can to support their incredible and life changing work.
Although I have come so far and feel pride in myself for not allowing my stammer to hold me back, it’s always with me and I do all I can to accept it as a beautiful part of me. I strive to be open about it and educate others on what I means to stammer and allow people to understand that I am just like everyone else and I deserve all the same opportunities as anyone. My stammer does not define me and it shouldn’t hold anyone back.
