Hi, my name is Faizah Ali. I am 16 and am part of a programme called Youth Champions, which is set up by the Scottish charity Youth School in the aim to develop the talent of young people by supporting and empowering them, so they can reach their full potential as youth leaders and social activists.
This year my group and I have volunteered to design, develop and deliver educational, recreational and enterprising activities to a group of young disadvantaged orphans from the age of 10 and over in Morocco, Rabat. The orphans we are hoping to help have most likely been forced to grow up way before they were ready to, because if they didn’t they would not have survived. Many of them barely scrap a living and live under a tin roof with no access to running water or electricity. The orphans most likely have never had the privilege of education, learning a new worthwhile skill or even having a fun, worry free childhood. Therefore our main aim is to design and deliver a summer school and enterprise project in Morocco called ‘Moroccan Stars.’ With this project we are hoping to ignite a sense of hope within the orphan’s hearts, so they realise that they are not alone and there are actually people who are thinking about them. As Winston Churchill once said, “All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honour, duty, mercy, hope. “ I firmly agree with this concept as I believe once you choose hope, anything is really possible. We are planning to have many activities lined up for the children such as football, cricket, baking, fun outings and most importantly to teach the children at least one new worthwhile skill. We will be delivering the programme with a group of young local Moroccan youth workers. The Moroccan team is lead by Fatima Zahra who has the role of local Project Coordinator. Here in Glasgow our project leader is Ken Imrie and Rabia Baber.
In turn my group and I personally hope to develop new and improve old skills. The skills my team and I will personally gain from this project will help us greatly in the future as we will learn to become more independent as individuals and better team players.
