Most of you will know that I used to be a runner and once upon a time had dreams of my own to be in a major Games be it Commonwealth or Olympics, but my joints were just not up to it and after years of injury I had to hang up my running spikes and surrender. However, performing at an elite level is something I still dream about and so after qualifying as a physiotherapist I decided that I wanted to be part of an elite team and help other potential world class performers fulfil their dreams.
I got involved with Goalball, which is the ParaOlympic sport for athletes who are visually impaired. Like I did, they train rigorously, dedicate a lot of time to their sport and go through the heart ache and elation that I used to experience. However, they face far more hurdles (excuse the pun) and challenges than I do, most of which I cannot help with. However, one that I can help with is their funding status. They are European Champions and potential medallists for London 2012 but they are lacking funds for even basic equipment, gym memberships and clothing.
So I have put on my running shoes once more, this time to run a little further than 400m and I plan to run the Brighton Marathon in April. All the money raised with go directly to the Goalball charity and will make a huge difference to the lives of these athletes who already face enough challenges without having to think of 'lack of funds' as a further obstacle.
I have never asked for sponsorship before (well not since the spelling test in 1992) and dont really plan on making a habit of doing marathons so please give generously
