Story
This year pupils in year 2 at Fairlight Primary School in Brighton started writing letters to and learning about pupils from Kebele 19 Elementary School on the outskirts of Gondar town in Ethiopia. It has been a fantastic experience and enhanced the children's learning. It has given them a purpose for writing and has brought to life our geography topic!
We want to support Kebele 19 in providing the best possible learning environment for their children - just as our children enjoy at Fairlight!
The most urgent need at Kebele 19 is to improve their library facilities & literacy learning. Currently the school has an underfunded and under-resourced library in a dusty mud building and cannot cope with the needs of the 1272 pupils who attend the school in shifts each day.
Kebele 19 need £661 to fund their Literacy and Libraries project. This will enable the school to:
- buy story books for students in grades 1 to 4,
- buy subject-specific reference books for grades 5 to 8,
- buy Ethiopian folk-tale books available in local language and translated in English,
- set up and run reading club,
- run a Reading Bee competition in the school.
- provide 3-day phonics training and teaching materials for grade 1 to 2 teachers,
- provide 1-day workshop in reading techniques to at least 2 teachers per grade,
- train the librarians and representatives from the reading committee and run, set up and help the school to establish a Library Award.
- provide administrative and management support locally.
Year 2 pupils at Fairlight are raising money through stalls and sponsored events. Please help us to smash our fundraising target!
