Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

When our gorgeous little Zeke was born, we never expected that he might need some assistance in his early days. Nevertheless, we found ourselves with a poorly boy, in the care of the Neonatal Unit at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital. Zeke had 1:1 nurse care, 24 hours a day, as they helped him on the road to recovery.

During his time in ICU, Zeke was 'lovingly' named Houdini by the nurses, for his sheer determination not to be hooked up to the monitors essential to his care. He was given four cannulas in five days (a Unit record after persistently removing them from his hands) and also regularly ditching his breathing mask and feeding tube if given the opportunity. This fighting spirit certainly helped with his rapid discharge and that spirit has continued at home too. Boy can this kid frown!

We were extremely lucky that Zeke was full term, and only needed three days of care in ICU. Yet, in that time, he was given full time care, unlimited medical support and the wonderful comfort of nurses. We were able to visit him 24/7 and will be forever grateful to Clare, Breffni, Honey, Bundi, Jess, and the rest of the team responsible for helping him to get well. While Zeke was by far the 'healthiest' on the ward, the average cost of neonatal care in the UK is £1,500 per child, per day, which makes it a very expensive, but wholly necessary cost to the NHS. We'd like to do our bit to cover even a small part of Zeke's care, and to pay it forward and enable the unit to continue doing their amazing, lifesaving work.
