Story
Following a debilitating back injury in July 2022, I decided
to take a holistic approach to my recovery. Part of that recovery included cold water therapy. It was having such a positive effect on not only my physical condition but my mental health. On the 31st of December 2022, I decided to do it every single day spending a minimum of 7 minutes in a Loch, River or my ice barrel. I didn’t have an end date in mind and the weeks turned into months, and I have recently passed the 6-month marker.
During my injury I have been in the fortunate position of receiving
physio from Katie Foster at Fire Fighter’s Charity from the early days of my injury. I visited the Firefighter’s Charity’s Jubilee House in October 2022. During the process I started to struggle mentally and was offered a place on the reset programme at Harcombe House in Devon in April. It gave me the tools to progress through my injury with the right frame of mind! I attended Jubilee House again in July 2023 where I was put through my paces and have finally been given the
green light to return to operational duties.
As a token of appreciation I have set a goal of a full calendar
year of cold water therapy dips no matter the weather to try and raise funds for the charity that I and so many others rely on.
I'm taking on a Fire family Challenge to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity. They provide specialist lifelong support for members of the UKs fire services community, empowering individuals to achieve mental, physical and social wellbeing throughout their lives.Whatever their reason for coming to the Charity whether they are injured, recovering from an illness, suffering from stress or anxiety their teams take the time to understand each persons mental, physical and social needs. To ensure the Charity can do this for over 5,000 people a year and to meet the £9m cost of operating its support services, it is dependent on regular donations from fire and rescue service personnel, past and present, as well as the general public.
