Story
My eldest cousin Richard Wilkinson was considered a rugby player of huge potential who would be extremely successful. He was just 17 when he lost his life in a car accident on the way back from playing in a sevens tournament for his local club Hawick Wanderers on April 4, 2009.
This year I have decided to take part in a 20 mile Kiltwalk in his memory. The charity I will be raising money for was chosen by his family which is called “Hearts + Balls”.
Hearts + Balls was conceived in 1999 when a player from the Lismore Rugby Club in Edinburgh suffered a serious spinal injury that left him paralysed. Since then they have donated around £700,000 to rugby players and their families. Through advice and advocacy, they also help them identify and apply for funds from other sources.
Any donations made will go towards offering assistance, both immediate and long-term, to those who have been impacted by catastrophic injury.
This can take the form of:
- Property conversions
- Equipment
- Travel costs
- Respite care
- Legal costs
- Counselling
