Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

On 3rd June 2023, I am attempting to complete the National Three Peaks Challenge. The challenge involves climbing the tallest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales in the space of 24 hours, making it one of the toughest hiking challenges in the UK. This totals 26 miles of walking over uneven terrain (some of it in the dark) and 10,000ft incline. I have already completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge, which involved walking 25 miles over 4,500ft of incline, in preparation for this event.

I would like to raise money for Salford Royal so that I can thank them for looking after me, and help them provide the same care for others with spinal injuries/conditions. After physio and two rounds of spinal injections, I underwent 7 hours of major spinal surgery on 26th January 2022. This involved stabilising my spine with screws, rods and a titanium cage.

During my six days in Salford Royal, the staff were amazing. From the surgeon, anaesthetist and theatre team who carried out the operation, to the nurses, physios and occupational therapists who looked after me on the ward and helped me to adapt afterwards, they put me at ease through a difficult week, despite the immense pressure they were under.

After my surgery, things like turning over in bed, sitting up and taking small steps were a challenge and required a great deal of help, but I set myself the ultimate goal of climbing a mountain to help motivate myself through my recovery. Now, after lots of physio, walking and time in the gym, I have managed to build up my strength, and I’m challenging myself to climb three mountains in three countries in 24 hours.

The money raised will be split between the RAPTOR theatre appeal and the Greater Manchester Centre for Clinical Neurosciences (MCCN).

MCCN offers world-class care for people with brain and spine disorders and injuries from across the UK. One in six people in the UK has a neurological condition and the MCCN performs more brain and spine operations than any other unit in the country. Money raised will help MCCN get innovative equipment that is not available through NHS funding, undertake research to develop new treatments and enhance the environment for patients and their families.

I am also raising funds for the first hybrid major trauma theatre in the UK, which again goes beyond the scope of the NHS and will care for patients from across the North West.

The RAPTOR Theatre will be located in the new Greater Manchester Major Trauma Hospital, currently being built on the Salford Royal Hospital site, and will treat those with life-threatening trauma injuries by performing scans, X-rays, and surgical procedures in one place. This will save precious time and reduce risk by ensuring patients don’t need to be moved to different locations to be cared for. The RAPTOR Theatre will prioritise multi-trauma patients (those with multiple complex injuries), giving them the best possible chance of survival.
