Story
On the 7th September 2020 my life changed drastically after my younger brother was the victim of an attempt on his life whilst on his way to school, which left him in a critical condition and requiring urgent medical attention to deal with the devastating injuries resulting from the gunshot wound. He was immediately airlifted to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, where he was eventually stabilised and successfully underwent life-saving surgery before being induced into a coma for the next month. This traumatic day was the start of a long journey to recovery and the beginning of my family's relationship with Addenbrooke's Hospital.
Throughout my brother's time at Addenbrooke's the quality of both the medical care and surgical work he received was nothing short of outstanding. Every member of staff went above and beyond to not only help my brother, but all the members of my family to recover from the trauma of this incident. My family left Addenbrooke's full of hope and truly touched by the bonds that had been formed with the staff and affiliated charities such as The Sick Children's Trust, who provided on-site accommodation for my parents to remain close by and The Children's Trust, who further continued his rehabilitation after being discharged from Addenbrooke's.
My decision to run the Brighton and London marathons was inspired by my brother's resilience and my family's determination to turn a negative situation into a positive one. Fundraising for the marathons provides the perfect opportunity for my family to express our gratitude to Addenbrooke's and give back to the hospital which unequivocally saved my brother's life. It also allows the wider community that were impacted by this incident to contribute effectively by donating to this fundraiser. The money raised from donations to this page will enable Addenbrooke's to continue its provision of excellent medical and surgical care to other people and families beginning their journey to recovery.
